Hola Caleb,

A unique experience very close to the capital city

It is a very creative, educational, enjoyable and well organized tour that really surprises the visitor. Even for us costarricans it is a discovery of unknown aspects of our country. An intelligent mixture of information about the use of plants and the need for their preservation.

Amazing Garden & Meadery tour!

This was a great tour. Ali was amazing and passionate about her creations.. Took an hour long walk through the gardens and learned so much from her. Then we came back to sample about 8 or 9 or the meads and beers. Very unique tastes and she explains in detail what goes into each one and you can smell and taste the ingredients.

Taking the garden tour first does help you understand the complex flavors that not only can go into their creations, but by chefs from around the world.

Thanks Ali & Michael

Alejandra and I are so glad that you enjoyed your Tasting and Tour Experience last week. Even though it is the rainy season, it is still a beautiful time to explore the farm and gardens and of course return to the meadery to enjoy some of the fermented beverages we make using the ingredients from the farm.

Must Do Experience!

This tour is a must do! It is really an interactive botanical garden tour with Ali. Her knowledge and infectious enthusiasm would be enough to warrant the tour, but the chance to see, touch, and taste fruits and plants along with the views makes it exceptional. BUT THAT IS NOT ALL- then you get to go inside and taste how honey from Michael and Ali’s own bee hives, combined with the flavors just experienced in the garden, are turned into wonderfully flavorful mead. Some meads taste like rose’, sparkling wine, sherry and beers. My favorites were the Moca and the Amapola, but we bought all of them and have enjoyed them on the rest of our trip! We toured with our college kids (18-23) who loved it!

Amazing day at the Meadery

To start, we showed up without reservations, keep that in mind when reading this review. We got to the Meadery around 1130. As we walked in, we received a warm welcome and asked about a tour/tasting. We were informed by the owner that there wasn't any availability for the day, but if we wanted to tour the gardens ourselves for a bit, they would attempt to make time for a personal tasting session at the restaurant bar. We toured the beautiful gardens, taking in the beautiful views as well as enticing aromas of the numerous plants, trees, and herbs. Upon returning to the Meadery we were told that a tasting session was possible and we walked, with the owner, up the the restaurant.. A beautiful building atop a hill with a fantastic view overlooking San Jose. We couldn't ask for better scenery to take in while we began the tasting. Keep in mind that the restaurant and Meadery are separate entities. The restaurant graciously allowed us to sit at the bar and enjoy the tasting, unscheduled. We started the tasting with 2 delicious beers, both of which were expertly crafted on site and we wish we could have enjoyed an entire bottle of each! Following that were the meads, which we found to be even more delicious and were met with informative conversation regarding the entire process from harvesting the ingredients through the entire brewing process. Upon finishing the tasting we received a brief tour of the orchards; where the ingredients are grown and harvested, tasting a few of the fresh ingredients as we walked and discussed more of the process for making the meads we had just tasted. Again, this was all unscheduled and the owners made room for us during their busy day. We couldn't be happier with our experience and, when we return to Costa Rica, this will be a stop for us once again.

It was a pleasure meeting both of you. I'm glad you enjoyed your mead and beer tasting at Costa Rica Meadery! Good luck with your own mead adventures in Alaska. When you return, bring some bottles of your fermentations and we can do an exchange!

I would ABSOLUTELY visit this Meadery again

You may think that you’re not into plants, but trust me, you are. Michael took my boyfriend and I around the garden and let us try every piece of fruit that we could find. The grounds are beautiful and the view from the treehouse is spectacular. I enjoyed tasting the different fruits so much that I forgot that there was a Mead tasting at the end!

We tried a variety of their different Mead beers and there is something for everyone. What’s Mead you ask? Michael and Alejandra will tell you all about it as you proceed to gulp down every drop. We sat and talked with them for awhile after the tasting and they answered all of our questions about mead and the Costa Rican culture.

The brewery is sparkling and the garden is lush with fruit. I would ABSOLUTELY visit this Meadery again to walk the grounds and drink their delicious beverages.

Bryce, I am very glad that you enjoyed the Garden and Meadery tour and tasting. It was nice meeting you and your boyfriend. Have a great time the rest of your trip and come see us again on your next visit to Costa Rica -- we will have some new meads for you to try!

Highly educational and completely unusual

Here is something that you would never expect to find so interesting. Michael and Alejandra introduced us to a marvelous world of local herbs for spices, food, natural colorants and essential oils.
Then they showed us their integration of these herbs and fruits into their unusual collection of craft meads. We tasted 4 of their 6 craft meads bottled like beers and we also tasted the more conventional sweeter meads. Ale’s enthusiasm and detailed knowledge of their products was contagious and fun.
We also toured their Botanical Garden which included most of the varieties of flora found in Central America. Don’t miss the house built in a tree with a wonderful view.
